With the addition of Grant Gelberg as a named partner, HYSM is now Huang Ybarra Gelberg & May LLP (HYGM). Mr. Gelberg joined the firm in 2015 after serving as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Major Frauds section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. His practice focuses on white collar criminal defense, internal corporate investigations, and litigation, with particular emphases on health care and securities-related matters. Together with HYGM partner Aaron May, Mr. Gelberg recently won an $8.6 million arbitration award against Morgan Stanley for unauthorized trading and FINRA rule violations and successfully defended a medical group in an investigation into its billing practices.
Founding partner Carlos Singer has left the firm to join Mayor Garcetti’s administration in his office of legal counsel. “Last year’s presidential campaign rekindled my interest in working in the public sector. I am looking forward to joining a team that is actively promoting a positive vision for our community,” said Mr. Singer.
“Carlos was an integral part of the founding of our firm and his energy and commitment helped put us on the path to success,” said partner Katherine Huang. “We will miss him but we know he will be working tirelessly on behalf of the people of Los Angeles and beyond.”
Since HYGM was formed in 2014, it has been recognized by the Daily Journal and JD Journal as a top boutique firm. The firm recently obtained an 8-figure jury award on behalf of a medical device distributor whose business had been disrupted by a manufacturer’s tortious interference. That award was included in The Recorder’s Top Verdicts & Settlements of 2016 and Chief Judge Moskowitz of the Southern District of California, who presided over the trial, noted that given the qualifications of HYGM’s attorneys, their rates are “exceedingly reasonable.” The multi-million award in the Morgan Stanley matter also received national attention, as it yielded one of the largest punitive damages awards in a single-plaintiff FINRA arbitration. The firm is currently representing high-profile individuals under investigation and defending major corporations in commercial disputes.
